Lyon hit a late winner to boost their hopes of European football next season with a 2-1 win over Toulouse, with the hosts now winless in the last 14 meetings between the two sides.

A torrential downpour in the south of France ensured that both teams struggled to maintain control of the ball during vital attacking moments, while bad decision-making from Rayan Cherki prevented an early Lyon goal.

The starlet was gifted the ball in the box and could’ve picked out Alexandre Lacazette for an easy tap-in, but he went for goal himself and dragged it wide.

Jeffinho caused the hosts multiple problems with his skill on the right wing, and the opener came after he was felled in the box.

Lacazette took full advantage from the spot, but he would become the villain just moments later.

The veteran striker couldn’t head the ball into an empty net from a corner, and the hosts immediately took advantage when Zakaria Aboukhlal applied the finishing touch to a counter-attack to level the game.

Toulouse struggled to take control of the game after the restart as Lyon applied the pressure, but it was the hosts who had the first big chance of the second half when Warren Kamanzi’s effort was superbly tipped around the post by Anthony Lopes.

The end-to-end nature of the game continued as Cherki weaved his way through the Toulouse defence before pulling it back for Corentin Tolisso, but his rising effort clipped the crossbar.

The match appeared to be destined to finish 1-1, but Toulouse switched off at the back and a combination of home defender Logan Costa and Lacazette at the far post saw the ball dribble over the line for a late winner.

Despite the unwanted winless record Toulouse are safe from relegation and have little to play for this season, but this is the first time Lyon have won three games in a row this season and it’s a winning run that’s come at the perfect time for them.
