The men's side of the Madrid Open is set to begin today, a day after the women's tournament started. All of the updates, highlights, the best social media, and more, can be found here in our daily Tennis Tracker.

23:45 CET - One final result to bring you from Madrid after a busy, busy day of tennis - Alize Cornet (33) has Elena Gabriela Ruse (25) of Belgium in three sets and nearly three hours of play. She eventually moved into the next round, winning 6-7, 6-4, 6-3.

23:26 CET - Jaqueline Cristian (24) has caused one of the upsets of the day, taking down the former US Open champion and French Open finalist Sloane Stephens (30) 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

22:09 CET - Some late night Spanish success in Madrid as Juame Munar (25) took down Thanasi Kokkinakis (27) in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.

21:57 CET - Thiago Monteiro (28) makes his way into the second round with a three-set victory over Borna Gojo (25), progressing with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 scoreline. Elsewhere, Danka Kovinic (28) breezed past Sara Errani (35) 6-4, 6-0.

21:11 CET - Richard Gasquet (36) needed just 61 minutes to knock out teenage wildcard Richard Landaluce (17), beating him 6-2, 6-1.

20:42 CET - Three more matches that have come to a conclusion in Madrid with Laura Siegemund (35) overcoming Nadia Podoroska (26) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Another game to finish in the women's draw sees Eugenie Bouchard (29) through after a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory against Dayana Yastremska (22). Elswhere, Emil Ruusuvuori (24) saw off the challenge of Ugo Humbert (24) in two tie-breaks to progress.

20:31 CET - A lot of tight games today and we have had another three-setter with Alycia Parks (22) downing Anna Schmiedlova (28) 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 in two hours and 14 minutes. The American will face Victoria Azarenka (33) - the 15th seed - in the next round.

20:03 CET - Still plenty of tennis to be played on the first day in Madrid and Marketa Vondrousova (23) has made light work of Marina Bassols (23) in a industrious 6-1, 6-3 success.

There was more of a tighter tussle between the Frenchman Benoit Paire (33) and Italian Matteo Arnaldi (22) with the Italian prevailing 6-1, 3-6, 7-6. He will play third seed Casper Ruud (24) in the second round.

19:42 CET - Oscar Otte (29) is through to the next round following a three-set win over Pavel Kotov (24). The German Otte won the first set 6-3 before Kotov replied with a 6-4 second set. However Otte bounced back winning the thrid and final set 6-4.

19:15 CET - Into the evening session in the Spanish capital and it is a short tournament for Diego Schwartzman (30) after he was beaten 7-5, 6-4 in just over two hours by Hugo Grenier (27). Elsewhere, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (31) squeezed past teenage wildcard Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva (17) in three sets, winning 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.

18:14 CET - A former finalist in Madrid, Stan Wawrinka (38) used all of his experience to battle to a 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 victory over world number 39 Maxime Cressy (25) in two-and-a-half hours of tennis.

18:08 CET - Lesia Tsurenko (33) is the next woman through in Madrid, cruising past Lucia Bronzetti (24) 6-1, 6-3. One of the happier people of the day will be Julia Grabher (26) after she replaced the injured Emma Raducanu in facing Viktoriya Tomova (28) and she is through to the next round, winning 6-1, 7-6.

17:45 CET - Madrid is in full swing on the first day with more results pouring in. Yannick Hanfmann (31) is through to the next round after the German defeated Juan Pablo Varillas (27) 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, whilst we have another Spanish victory after Irene Burillo Escorihuela (25), a qualifier from Zaragoza has beaten veteran Kaia Kanepi (37) in three sets. The Spaniard is rewarded with a plum second round match against Coco Gauff (19).

17:17 CET - Nearly three hours was needed to separate Alexander Bublik (25) and Daniel Elahi Galan (26) with the Kazakh Bublik finally getting the better Colombian opponent 7-6, 6-7, 6-4

16:28 CET - Results continue to fly in with two more coming from the WTA event. Magdalena Frech (25) has downed Jasmine Paolini (27) in straight sets - 6-2, 6-3 - whilst Varvava Gracheva (22), who had a very good time on the hard courts recently, was unable to translate that onto the clay, losing to Xiyu Wang (22) 7-6, 3-6, 4-6.

16:03 CET - David Goffin (32), the former world number seven is out in the first round in Madrid at the hands of Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (30), who won the match 6-4, 6-4.

Another Spanish success in the women's draw as Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (31) has beaten Anna Blinkova (24) 6-3, 6-0 in 66 minutes.

15:25 CET - Aliaksandra Sasnovich (29) has battled past wildcard Elina Svitolina (28) 6-4, 7-5 to face 28th seed Maria Bouzkova (24) in the next round.

15:03 CET - Another three-setter has come to a close with Quentin Halys (26) taking down Alexei Popyrin (23) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in one hour and 57 minutes. Halys will face Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista-Agut (35) next.

14:50 CET - Two results to update you on from Madrid's WTA tournament where Camila Osorio (21) has beaten France's Clara Burel (22) in 81 minutes with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. Elsewhere, world number 62 Anna Kalinskaya (24) battled past Czech teenager Brenda Fruhvirtova (16) 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two hours.

14:08 CET - Arantxa Rus (32) has pulled off a relative shock in the women's first round, beating world number 46 Amanda Anisimova (21) 7-5, 6-2 in 95 minutes with the reward of a second round tie against ninth seed Maria Sakkari (27).

In a much tighter battle, Albert Ramos-Vinolas (35) - a Spanish native - needed three sets and nearly three hours to take down Ilya Ivashka (29) 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.

13:58 CET - Alex Molcan (25) is through in the men's draw with a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 victory over China's Wibing Yu (23).

13:34 CET - In an all Spanish affair, Rebeka Masarova (23) has seen off Cristina Busca (25) 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 to set up a second round clash with Donna Vekic (26).

13:17 CET - Caty McNally (21) has advanced despite a real battle with Hungarian Dalmi Galfi (24). The American world number 69 lost the first set 6-4, but rallied to win the next two 6-0, 6-3.

13:07 CET - Former world number one Daniil Medvedev (27) will headline the return of elite men's tennis to China after a COVID-enforced break of four years, organisers said on Wednesday.

Back in Madrid, Camila Giorgi (31) has been forced to retire hurt against Mayar Sherif (26) with their first round game evenly poised 6-4, 4-6. 

12:50 CET - Results are coming in thick and fast from Madrid now, with Gregoire Barrere (29) beating wildcard Emilio Nava (21) 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. The Frenchman will now face Grigor Dimitrov (31) in the next round.

12:47 CET - Some bad news for Emma Raducanu (20) fans as she has withdrawn from her first round game against Viktoriya Tomova (28). The tournament said on Twitter that the Brit was suffering with a hand injury.

12:41 CET - With the amount of games across both draws in the Spanish capital, shocks and upsets won't be too far away and we have our first of the day with former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (20) knocked out by teenager Mirra Andreeva (15) 6-3, 6-4 - a real breakout win for the young Russian.

Elsewhere, Tatjana Maria (35), who won a WTA tournament in Bogota earlier this month, is through after beating Alexandra Eala (17) 6-1, 6-1.

12:26 CET - It is a busy day of tennis in Madrid, with both the men's and women's draws under way and we have our first result with Hugo Gaston (22) taking down compatriot Jeremy Chardy (36) in straights sets 6-3, 6-4.

9:08 CET - Carlos Alcaraz (19) rode home support to the Barcelona title on Sunday and knows fans will accept nothing less than victory at this week's Madrid Open but the world number two says he is happy to shoulder the expectations of his compatriots.

The Spaniard, who also won at Buenos Aires and Indian Wells this season and is keen to put another marker down on clay ahead of the French Open next month, says he thrives on the atmosphere of the home crowds in the Spanish capital.

"I don't take it as pressure, actually the complete opposite. For me it's motivation," Alcaraz said on Tuesday.

7:59 CET - World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas (24) said his run to the final in Barcelona had served as a reminder of what it felt like to be a strong contender at a tournament again and left him full of confidence heading into this week's Madrid Open.

After missing out on a first Grand Slam title in January with defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, Tsitsipas went out early in Rotterdam and Indian Wells before reaching the fourth round in Miami and the Monte Carlo quarters.

The Greek then bounced back in Barcelona, where he lost to world number two Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday, but his recent form has him in good spirits with Roland Garros on the horizon.

Tsitsipas said he had a lot of matches on clay under his belt and he considered himself a "candidate" in Madrid.

"The run I had in Barcelona brought me joy because after the Australian Open I didn't go deep in tournaments," he said.

7:11 CET - Veteran Stan Wawrinka will be starting his Madrid journey today as he takes on American Maxime Cressy. He will be followed by Australian star Thanasi Kokkinakis who takes on local talent James Munar, and speaking of local talent Roberto Carballes Alena will be taking on David Goffin.

Later on in the afternoon, Finnish Emil Ruusuvuori will be challenging Frenchman Ugo Humbert.

Meanwhile, for the ladies, day two has already arrived in the Spanish capital! A lot of the attention will be on Emma Raducanu as she takes on Viktoriya Tomova. The Briton failed to make it past the first round in her last tournaments and her fans will be hoping she can get back to her best.

Lesia Tsurenko will be making her first appearance since the Charleston Open earlier this month, after withdrawing from Indian Wells. The Ukrainian will be facing Lucia Bronzetti.
