In Barcelona, Carlos Alcaraz (19) continued his quest to defend his title, while over in Stuttgart, fellow defending champion Iga Swiatek (21) returned to action on a day full of intriguing clashes. 22:04 CET - World number seven Elena Rybakina (23) had to withdraw from her match with Beatriz Haddad Maia (26) in Stuttgart this evening.

The Brazilian was on her way to a victory in any case and will next play Ons Jabeur (28) in the quarter-finals.

16:54 CET - Coco Gauff (19) has been sent home by Anastasia Potapova (22), with the Russian crushing the American 6-2 6-3. Paula Badosa (25) is also through in Stuttgart after a comfortable victory.

Over in Barcelona, Lorenzo Musetti (21) came from a set down to defeat Cameron Norrie (27) 3-6 6-4 6-1.

15:22 CET - Alexander Zverev (26) has been stunned by Christopher O'Connell (28), losing 7-6 6-4 to the Aussie in Munich.

12:00 CET: Rafa Nadal (36) has had an injury-plagued year so far and the clay court king is set to miss next week's Madrid Open as well he announced today.

"Initially it had to be a six to eight-week recovery period and we are now on fourteen," Nadal said in a video published on his social media accounts.

"The weeks are passing and I had the desire of being able to play in tournaments that are the most important in my career such as Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros and for the moment I have missed Monte Carlo and Barcelona. I will not be able to be in Madrid unfortunately."

11:28 CET - Alex De Minaur (24) is through to the quarter-finals in Barcelona without even having to play a shot after his opponent Grigor Dimitrov (31) withdrew before the match. He will now face either Stefanos Tsitsipas (24) or Denis Shapovalov (24) next.

9:55 CET - Belinda Bencic (26) has had to withdraw from the upcoming claycourt tournaments in Madrid and Rome, saying that she has been struggling with a hip injury for the last few weeks.

9:51 CET - Aryna Sabalenka (24) completed an impressive win over 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova (27) in Stuttgart yesterday, and the Belarusian said the victory has given her a confidence boost ahead of Roland Garros.

8:38 CET - Today, we see the return of Iga Swiatek (21), who is ready to defend her Stuttgart crown following a rib injury. She faces Qinwen Zheng (20) at 17:00 CET. Elena Rybakina (23) and Aryna Sabalenka (24) are also in action on the clay, as they both look to continue their dominant starts to the season.

Carlos Alcaraz (19) faces fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (35) in Barcelona at 16:00 CETA number of other heavyweights also take to the court, including Stefanos Tsitsipas (24), Jannik Sinner (21) and Casper Ruud (24).
