Osasuna momentum halted as Getafe claim first victory at El Sadar Stadium for 15 years

Getafe CF registered their first victory at the El Sadar Stadium since November 2007 after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over CA Osasuna.

Hoping to build upon their best-ever start to a La Liga (LL) campaign in the 21st century after accumulating 12 points from a possible 15, the hosts began the opening embers of the contest in emphatic fashion as Rubén García’s strike agonisingly struck the right-hand post. After registering four victories from their opening five top-flight matches for the first time since the 1981/82 campaign, Osasuna continued to showcase an unparalleled attacking exhibition, as David Soria had to be on his toes to prevent Darko Brašanac’s header from opening the scoring. However, despite an invigorated start from the hosts, it was Getafe that went ahead against the run of play in the 30th minute when left-back Juan Iglesias culminated his marauding burst up-field with a precise finish through the legs of Sergio Herrera for his first-ever goal in LL.

With HT fast approaching, Jagoba Arrasate's side’s assignment of navigating a passage back in the contest was made numerically more complicated when VAR intervened to instruct Isidro Díaz de Mera to show Ezequiel Ávila a straight red card for a reckless challenge on goalscorer Iglesias, after initially only showing the Argentine forward a yellow card.

Unbeaten in their last six H2H encounters, Getafe were inches away from doubling their lead in the 49th minute when Enes Ünal’s free-kick brought an exquisite save from Herrera. Occupying 4th position in the LL standings before the commencement of this round of matches, Osasuna were the first to roll the substitutional dice in an attempt to find a route back into the contest as Arrasate introduced Rubén Peña and Abde Ezzalzouli into the fray. However, amid a disintegrated second half in the way of goalscoring opportunities for either side, Getafe took the match away from their undisciplined hosts in the 77th minute when Gastón Álvarez headed Domingos Duarte’s nimble flick-on back across goal past the helpless silhouette of Herrera.

Getafe remained in control, despite also going down to 10-men when Luis Milla was shown a second yellow card in stoppage-time, to record only their second victory across 11 previous LL matches. Meanwhile, Osasuna were left to reflect on the unfamiliar taste of defeat after succumbing to their first defeat at the El Sadar this season.
