Nations League roundup: Italy on song to relegate England, Hungary stun Germany

Hungary continued their unlikely march to the Nations League finals with a shock 1-0 win over Germany in Leipzig as Italy relegated a pitiful England to League B with a 1-0 victory in Milan. In League B, there was a win for Bosnia & Herzogovina as Finland and Romania shared the spoils in Helsinki.

Germany - Hungary 0-1

In his penultimate game for his country, Adam Szalai ended an eight-game international scoring drought to help Hungary earn just a second win over Germany since 1985.

Marco Rossi’s men lead UEFA Nations League Group A3 by two points ahead of a winner-take-all clash with Italy in their next outing.

A top of the table clash in Leipzig would prove decisive, with Hungary sensing the importance of the occasion.

Germany’s threat was minimal from the outset, with Antonio Rudiger’s long passing into the forwards their only attacking avenue, and that was proving ineffective.

The Magyars took full advantage and took a deserved lead through a piece of brilliance from their captain. Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner to the near post was delightfully flicked on by Szalai, nestling inside the far post.

Die Mannschaft were made to wait until the 39th minute for their maiden shot on target, as Thomas Müller’s header was comfortably denied by Peter Gulacsi.

A desperately needed half-time tactical tweak from Hansi Flick brought the hosts back into the contest, with Leroy Sane finding space on the inside left, forcing the Hungary shot-stopper into his most strenuous piece of work of the night to deny him.

Joshua Kimmich, who has directly contributed to a goal in three of his previous four internationals, was proving threatening, firing into the side-netting from range before a well-struck volley was crucially blocked.

Hungary have the best defence in the group, conceding just three from their opening four games, and that stubborn rearguard was displaying why as they held the Germans at bay in the closing stages.

The Magyars are just 90 minutes away from potential history, with a draw against Italy securing their place in the semi-finals, which would be the first time they’ve reached the last four of an international competition in 50 years.

Meanwhile, Germany are now out of contention, as they lost for the first time in 14 matches.

Italy - England 1-0

A moment of inspiration from Giacomo Raspadori saw Italy beat England 1-0 in UEFA Nations League Group A3, which keeps Gli Azzurri unbeaten in the last six games between the two sides.

Nicolo Barella and Harry Kane were the only two starters to have previously scored in this campaign while the reverse fixture had ended 0-0, so perhaps it is no surprise that there wasn’t an early flurry of goalmouth action.

Gianluca Scamacca showed the most intent to score a quick opener, as the striker’s header was tipped onto the crossbar by Nick Pope before he struck wide with a speculative effort from range.

Neither side were creating especially dangerous chances before the break, and Bryan Cristante’s strike was blocked by Eric Dier before Kane hit a frustrated shot comfortably over the crossbar.

There was a greater intensity as the teams emerged from the break, as Federico Dimarco came within inches of finding Francesco Acerbi in the box before Kane had a shot blocked by Leonardo Bonucci.

The England captain endured more frustration soon after, as he was left bleeding following a clash of heads with Rafael Toloi and forced to wait before coming back on.

The match finally received a burst of quality in the 68th minute, as Giacomo Raspadori controlled Bonucci’s ball behind the Three Lions defence, cut across Kyle Walker and curled a strike out of Nick Pope’s reach.

Gianluigi Donnarumma hadn’t been tested much throughout the game, but produced an impressive double-stop to deny Kane with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Jude Bellingham had been one of England’s better players on the night, but his horrible strike encapsulated the Three Lions’ misery.

The scoreline could have been even worse as Dimarco hit the post late on, but the shorter margin will be no consolation as England were relegated to League B, with plenty of questions yet to be answered ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

Meanwhile, Italy secured their place in League A and will even be heading to the finals if they beat Hungary on Monday evening.

Bosnia and Herzegovina - Montenegro 1-0

Bosnia and Herzegovina cemented their place atop League B, Group 3 in the UEFA Nations League with a 1-0 home victory over Montenegro, thanks to a Ermedin Demirovic in the dying moments of the first half. The result sees Zmajevi extend their unbeaten streak in the group to five straight games.

The Bosnians gave their visitors little room to breathe from the opening whistle, and with waves of attacking pressure and a boisterous home crowd on top of them, Montenegro was bending for the opening half hour.

They appeared to finally break when Demirovic stabbed home to set the Bilino Polje Stadium alight, but the celebrations were cut short when the goal was ruled out for offside.

Luckily for the home crowd, the deadlock was broken with nearly the last kick of the half when Demirovic slotted the ball into the back of the net after getting on the end of Edin Dzeko’s flicked-on header, giving the hosts a much deserved lead at the break.

The hunt for a second goal was on for the home side, as a two-goal lead would likely be insurmountable for Montenegro, whose high quality attacking opportunities were few and far between in the opening hour.

Despite Bosnia and Herzegovina being wasteful in the final third and failing to put the visitors to the sword, Montenegro did not take advantage of their luck and find a leveller, which may leave the players with plenty of regrets on the journey home.

With a chance to leapfrog their opponents on the night and take control of the group, Miodrag Radulovic’s men will be disappointed to put in such a flat performance.

The road defeat ensures the visitors will miss out on promotion to League A.

Finland - Romania 1-1

The relegation battle in UEFA Nations League Group B3 will go down to the final day after the group’s bottom two sides, Finland and Romania, played out a 1-1 draw to extend Romania’s unbeaten head-to-head run to 14 games.

With doubts remaining over whether Finland could retain their League B status for next term prior to kick-off, the onus was on the hosts to take the game to Romania in search of a survival-sealing victory.

Their start couldn’t have been much better, with Onni Valakari teeing up the country’s all-time record goalscorer Teemu Pukki to fire home from the edge of the area.

Romania certainly weren’t down and out and showed Finland that they couldn’t rest easy on their one-goal advantage. Deian Sorescu’s fierce drive from 25 yards was tipped onto the post by Lukas Hradecky, before Andrei Ratiu inadvertently hit the woodwork from an unthreatening cross just moments later.

Sorescu was proving difficult for Finland to deal with, firing wide early in the second half before glancing a header agonisingly wide of the post. While the Romanian could be accused of being wasteful with his own chances, he proved influential in Romania’s equaliser.

He fed Nicusor Bancu, who perfectly cut the ball back for Florin Tanase to prod home just his second international goal.

That strike completely changed the dimension of the game, with the visitors moving into the ascendency knowing a victory would take them off the foot of the table.

Dennis Man’s deflected effort was easily gathered by Hrádecký, and with 20 minutes remaining it seemed as though Romania were the only side with any intentions of winning the game.

It was perhaps a surprise to see Finland on the back foot for large parts of the game, but they should’ve snatched all three points when Benjamin Kallman worked a yard in the box before flashing an effort wide of the goal.

Romania have the harder of the two final day games as they face table-topping Bosnia at home, while Finland travel to Montenegro on the back of a huge opportunity missed here.
