The World Championship group stage is roughly halfway through and the potential makeup of the quarter-finals is starting to take shape. There are still many teams in play, however, and results are becoming more and more important by the round. On Thursday, the play started with Sweden demolishing Hungary and the Czech Republic coming back to beat Slovenia. Later, Germany beat Denmark in a goal fest while Switzerland stayed top of Group B with a win over Slovakia.

Flashscore brings you all the day's results from Tampere and Riga.

Group A

Denmark 4 Germany 6

Going into their fourth group match, Denmark hadn't lost a game at the World Championships. Germany, on the other hand, had yet to record a win, surprisingly. When the teams met in Tampere on Thursday it was a must-win for the Germans and a chance for the Danes to solidify their top-four status in the group.

Denmark's Matias Lassen scored the only goal of the first period before Germany went and scored three unanswered goals in the second - John-Jason Peterka, Alexander Ehl and Moritz Muller all getting on the scoresheet. Mathias Bau Hansen made it 3-2 going into the second break.

In the final period, Christian Wejse drew Denmark level with just five minutes remaining but Jonas Muller came up with a quick reply to edge Germany back in front and Marcel Noebels added a late power-play empty netter to boost the lead.

Wejse added a consolation for Denmark before Nico Sturm added a sixth to secure a first win for Germany.

Hungary 1 Sweden 7

Sweden went into the fourth match of their campaign without having lost a game. Hungary, meanwhile, had just one overtime win to smile about.

True to form, the Swedes raced into a 2-0 lead early on thanks to goals from Oscar Lindberg and Jacob De La Rose. The Hungarians pulled on back via Roland Kiss but Dennis Everberg restored Sweden's two-goal lead before the first break.

In the second period, the Swedes ran away with it, adding goals from Andre Petersson, Jonatan Berggren and De La Rose. Lucas Raymond added a seventh in the third.

Group B

Switzerland 4 Slovakia 2

Three wins from three had Switzerland sitting pretty atop the Group B standings going into their clash with Slovakia in Riga.

Goals from Jonas Siegenthaler and Nino Niederreiter put the Swiss into a commanding 2-0 lead with five minutes gone in the second period and it looked like they would be cruising to a fourth win.

The Slovaks proved no easy beats, however, and goals from Andrej Kudrna and Pavol Regenda on either side of a missed Swiss penalty in the second period had them level with one of the tournament favourites.

Despite that Slovak resurgence, Christian Marti put the Swiss back in the lead in the third and Gaetan Haas added an empty netter in the dying moments.

Czech Republic 6 Slovenia 2

The Czech Republic have had a mixed start to the tournament, with injuries and unavailability hampering their chances. Yet, still, they weren't expecting to be seriously tested in Riga by a Slovenia side that had lost all three of their opening Group B matches.

To everyone's surprise, though, the underdog Slovenes swept into a 2-0 lead in the opening period thanks to strikes from Miha Verlic and Jan Urbas.

Dominik Kubalik pulled one back for the Czechs in the second, his fourth of the Championship, and scored the equaliser in the third period to move to five for the tournament.

Back in the game and with their tails up, the Czechs stole the lead through Roman Cervenka before Michal Kempny added a fourth for good measure. Kubalik completed his hat trick with an empty netter in the closing stages and Jakub Flek made it six late on.
