Auxerre’s dream return to Ligue 1 continued as they extended their unbeaten run to three games in a closely fought 1-0 win against struggling Strasbourg at the Stade Abbe Deschamps.

Fresh from securing their first top-flight victory in over ten years against Montpellier, newcomers Auxerre welcomed a Strasbourg side who were still looking for their first league triumph of the season. It was the visitors who set the pace of the game early on, and Dimitri Lienard pounced on a Paul Joly defensive error to create some space in the box but put his shot just wide of the post, giving Auxerre a big let off.

Strasbourg continued to pile on the pressure and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde forced Benoit Costil into a superb save shortly after.

A felt like a matter of time until the visitors would score, although they were made to pay for their wasted chances just shy of the half-hour mark. Lassine Sinayoko did brilliantly to pick out Gaetan Perrin who made no mistake from the edge of the area, firing the ball into the bottom corner giving Matz Sels no chance. Evidently shellshocked, Strasbourg struggled to create chances after going behind, allowing the hosts to see out the remainder of the half at 1-0.

Despite dominating the ball after the restart, Le Racing still failed to create, reflecting the fact they had only managed three goals so far this season. Joly thought he had settled the game ten minutes from time when his effort found the back of the net but it was quickly pulled back for offside to hand Strasbourg a much-needed lifeline. Substitute Habib Diallo then got on the end of a brilliant corner to criminally put his header wide of the post.

Kevin Gameiro summed up his side's performance when he somehow managed to scuff his effort straight into the hands of Costil from close range to see the game finish 1-0. Strasbourg’s fourth game without a win sees them slip into the relegation zone whilst Auxerre fly up the league into fifth ahead of the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
